Writing – sentence structure, recount, and comments
The writing component of the literacy program is integrated throughout a range of programs and is practiced across the school day. When teaching ‘writing’ we focus on composing texts using a multimodal communication approach. This means composing a text can be anything from visually creating a shopping list, to building sentences using assisted communication devices (such as an iPad), or writing up a book review and everything in between.
We also focus on recounting or retelling favourite lessons or highlights at the end of each day in our ‘afternoon wrap up’ sessions. During these lessons, students compose recounts using a variety of methods such as commenting boards, verbal language, picture exchange and written worksheets. Students always get a lot of joy from watching videos, looking at photos or talking about what happened during their day. Using photos and videos of themselves engaging in activities provide the students with a visual vignette of a salient event in their day.
Handwriting and fine motor activities are also imbedded into the writing program and are taught in conjunction with relevant and motivating content across each day.
